Sophomore: Fall

Attend the Second Year Career Plan Workshop and stay connected throughout the year with a career counselor.

Take a career assessment.

  • Log in to UCR Handshake to access Focus 2 (via Resources section). This is a free assessment tool that provides information about careers and environments that fit your personality type, interest and work values. Schedule an appointment with a career counselor to review your results.

Update your resume.

  • College experiences should start to take the place of high school experiences on your resume.
  • Include experiences such as: volunteering, clubs and organizations, part-time work and internships (check out biology and other resume template examples).

Explore majors/careers.


Attend the Graduate & Professional School Info Day.

  • Representatives from graduate and professional school programs from across the nation will be present to give application and admission information.

Research and apply for internships. (Start early!)

  • Great way to try out a company or career.  Attend the Nuts and Bolts of an Internship workshop and explore internship listings on UCR Handshake.
  • Learn more about internships.
  • Many structured, summer internship programs have application deadlines in the winter quarter. Check out Jobs section and CareerShift on UCR Handshake for more internship opportunities.

Visit the Health Professions Advising Center. (Pre-Med and Health Professions Track)


Optional: Apply for the Education Abroad Program.

  • Ever thought about living and studying in a foreign country? The Education Abroad Program (EAP) provides access to vast sources of knowledge and exciting field study options in a wide variety of cultural, social and political environments. Studying abroad will give you the skills and awareness necessary for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.

Sophomore: Winter


Attend workshops to help prepare you for your job search.


Continue to apply to internships.


Stay involved on campus as a leader.

  • Volunteer to coordinate a project or committee.

Practice interviewing.

  • Attend an Interview Skills Workshop.
  • Make a mock interview appointment with a career counselor.

Undergraduate research experience.

Look out for medical-school-related workshops. (Pre-Med Track)

Sophomore: Spring


Apply for internships.

  • Internship positions are still available. Check UCR Handshake for listings.

Practice networking.

  • Attend a Networking Your Way to a Job or a Mastering LinkedIn Workshop.
  • Stay active with your LinkedIn account and join groups and organizations related to your field of interest.

Attend the Health Professions School Information Day.

  • Recruiters, admissions officers and staff from health professional schools and programs participate. 

Attend the Last Chance Career Fair.

  • Employers will be on campus to discuss full-time, part-time and internship openings. Learn more about the Last Chance Career Fair.

Attend NASC 094.

Sophomore: Summer


Gain experience.

  • Capitalize on opportunities, paid or unpaid, that help you explore your field of interest (summer internships, volunteering, part-time work, etc.
  • Work or volunteer in the medical field. (Pre-Med Track)

Research graduate/professional schools. (Graduate School Track)
