Internships

An internship can be short term or long-term, a one-time or repeated assignment with a learning component. While many students seek internships during the summer, others integrate internships into their schedules during the academic year as well. The primary focus is toward experience in an area of interest or one related to the student’s major. Students wishing to earn academic credit for the internship should contact their academic department for specific requirements.

Parents wishing to encourage their students should recommend the following steps.

  1. Attend an Internship Workshop (Several are offered by the Career Center each quarter. They are listed on the Career Center Calendar under the title: Lights! Camera! Internship!)
  2. Develop a system to research various internships and establish a timeline. Successful internship searches often require one to two quarters to find the right experience. (Many competitive Summer Internships have application deadlines in February or March.)
  3. Update your resume. (For a quick critique, use the Center's Drop-In Hours or visit a counselor at the Career Doctor in the Commons on Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.)
  4. Check the Career Center Website regularly. (Internships are often posted on SCOTjobs and company representatives routinely offer information sessions to assist students in learning about their firms.)
  5. Speak to family, friends, academic advisors, etc. (This type of networking is a valuable way to discover "hidden" internships.)
