4-Year Plan

The 4-year college plan provides a list of action steps to accomplish during your four years at college, from freshman to senior year. The 4-year college plan can serve as a checklist and reflection of your accomplishments.

    First Year Goals
  1. Visit the Career Center and sign up with SCOTjobs online
  2. Get to know your academic advisor and faculty in your department. (If you are undeclared, meet some of the faculty who teach your general education classes.)
  3. Use Career Center workshops and information sessions to explore your interests and values as they relate to possible career paths.
  4. Join a club or student organization.
  5. Begin your first resume. (The Career Center offers several Resume Workshops every quarter!)
  6. Think about a part-time job or volunteer experience after the first quarter.


    Second Year Goals
  1. Seek leadership positions in clubs, organizations, or student government.
  2. Begin working on your interview skills. (The Career Center has Optimal Resume online to assist with your growth.)
  3. If you are undecided, think about majors that complements your “general” career goals. (Attend a career center Major Choice Workshop!)
  4. Plan a summer internship or job to gain profession experience. (Test Drive Your Careers workshops are offered three times every quarter.)
  5. Begin building a network of colleagues, faculty, and prospective employers.
  6. Continue to explore your interests, skills, and values by attending information sessions on campus.
  7. Have a Drop-In counselor review your resume.


    Third Year Goals
  1. Use the Career Center’s online resources to determine specialized areas in your chosen field.
  2. Attend career fairs and other employer events to “market” yourself.
  3. Seek senior leadership positions in clubs and organizations.
  4. Establish goals for summer internships that include focusing on specialty areas in your chosen field.
  5. Update your resume and student profile information in the Career Center.
  6. Secure information interviews and job shadowing experiences.
  7. Research graduate or professional schools and schedule admissions tests.
  8. Develop and nurture mentor relationships with faculty and business leaders.


    Fourth Year Goals
  1. Update your resume and be sure it is loaded SCOTjobs
  2. Research company information in the Career Center Resource Room and with Vault Online.
  3. Register with the On Campus Interview program.
  4. Attend career fairs relevant to your interests
  5. Join professional organizations relevant to your chosen career.
  6. Submit application for graduate and professional schools in the Fall of your fourth year. Take admissions tests.
  7. Maintain and strengthen relationships advisors, faculty and mentors to establish a corps of references and recommendations.
  8. Interview, interview, interview... and tell the Career Center when you accept a position!
  9. Celebrate, because the real work begins now!
