Preparing for Graduate & Professional Schools

What You Should Know Before Graduate School

Is graduate school a logical option for you? Are you ready to go? Remember how hard it was to choose an undergraduate school and major? Don't expect graduate school choices to be any easier. Before you go further, think about the following:

  • Is a graduate or professional degree a necessary stop for your career choice?
  • Have you researched graduate programs?
  • Do you know what is involved in the application process?
  • Does every graduate or professional school require an entrance exam?
  • Can you afford it?
  • Will you be able to get recommendations or letters of reference?

The bottom line is that not everyone needs a graduate or professional degree to pursue a challenging profession. The best way to find out is to ask questions and find the right information. The pages in this section have been put together to help you sort out your decision and answer your questions.

The Graduate and Professional School Team

The following units have joined forces on campus to provide UCR students with the best and most up-to-date information about the graduate and professional school application process. We provide workshops and seminars every quarter.

The Career Center at UCR assists students with a full range of career development resources. The counseling staff consult with individual students and groups to ensure that they have the most current information about careers, graduate school and professional development.

The Academic Resource Center at UCR is a great source for tutoring as well as assistance with writing personal statements and writing samples, and preparing for graduate admission exams.

Health Professions Advising Center at UCR provides information and application assistance for students considering careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing and other allied health fields.
