Using a Curriculum Vitae
A curriculum vitae (CV) is the traditional standard for presenting your qualifications for academic employment. A professional curriculum vitae can be lengthy and is inappropriate for most jobs in the public and private sector, other than research jobs or corporate "partnerships" with institutions of higher education. Assume that all academic positions at four-year schools require a curriculum vitae and that other positions should be sent resumes, unless a curriculum vitae is specifically requested.
One exception is that community colleges sometimes request resumes. We recommend that you use a functional resume in these cases. All academic applications should include a detailed cover letter that addresses skills, knowledge and abilities required by any job announcement.
