Important Notice for Work-Study Employers
Work-Study funds are available only for the academic year, therefore, any Work-Study jobs posted during the summer will not be made viewable for students till September 8, 2008 or until the agreement has been received and approved by Financial Aid. Students may begin working on September 22, 2008 using federal funds. If you hire a student prior to this start date your organization will be responsible for 100% of the student's salary until September 22th.
Federal Work-Study Program The Federal Work-Study Program is one component of funds granted by the Federal Government to aid individuals in financial need to achieve a college education. The funds under the Federal Work-Study Program assist employers by paying a portion of the qualified students' hourly wage. The employer will pay the remaining balance, or in the case of America Reads and America Counts programs, the students' hourly wage is paid for entirely with Federal funds. The UC Riverside Financial Aid Office determines the percentage split each year.
To qualify to participate in the program, the employer must be a public or private non-profit organization and classified by the Internal Revenue Service as tax-exempt. Employers are encouraged to develop Work-Study positions which will provide students with a meaningful learning experience and help meet their educational or career goals, without displacing or replacing regular employees.
The Federal Work-Study Program is available from September to June. Work-Study students are permitted to work up to 19 hours per week during school sessions and up to 39 hours per week during any full week when classes are not in session. Students receive Federal Work-Study based on their financial need. In the event a student depletes his or her award, the employer may terminate the student employee, or assume 100% of the hourly wage thereafter.
