Graduate School

Graduate or Professional School

Parents and students often visualize an educational future that includes graduate or professional school immediately after the completion of undergraduate studies. Many variables should go into such a determination including finances, field of endeavor, geographical mobility, and the student’s suitability for post-graduate studies.

The primary consideration should be long term career goals. While many fields require post-graduate education, most do not. Many science-related fields have a career path for those with only undergraduate training.

Likewise, graduate school should not be seen as a means of postponing the inevitable job search. Students have sometimes discovered that an advanced degree with little practical experience makes starting their career more difficult... not easier.

    Consider these steps

  1. Decide if terminal degree is necessary.
  2. What criteria are most important? (financial, reputational, or professional)
  3. Full-time or part-time.
  4. Is relocation necessary.
  5. Attend Graduate/Professional School Day Fair each fall.
  6. Attend Law School Information Day each Fall
  7. Use the Career Center's Resource Room and online resources for answers to your questions.
