Non-Academic Employment

Many graduate students seek non-academic positions and find challenging opportunities for personal and professional growth that they had not considered when they entered grad school. Likewise, many companies, governmental agencies, and Non-Governmental Organizations are finding that graduate training imbues prospective employees with rich research, analytical, and communication skills. While performing a non-academic search requires patience and rethinking one's skill set, it is often rewarding and creates opportunities that do not exist in the academic world.

We recommend that Grads use informational resources such as The Chronicle of Higher Education's Using Graduate School Strategically or Job Seeking Experiences (requires free registration). Alexandra Lord and Julie Taddeo have put together Beyond Academe as a Web home for humanities Grads seeking non-academic employment. The Scholarly Societies Project includes many professional Websites that list both academic and non-academic positions.
